उत्तर
Kwame Nkrumah became Ghana’s first president. He had enormous goals for Africa and Ghana, but some of his bold ideas and actions upset others. This prompted a military coup in 1966, which removed him from power. Here are four primary reasons:
- Authoritarian rule and no democracy: Nkrumah established the CPP as the sole legal party. He was elected president for life. He restricted freedom and imprisoned opponents. He was viewed by many as a dictator who ignored other people.
- Economic problems and corruption claims: Ghana has financial difficulties, a large debt load, and declining prices for its primary product, cocoa. Many claimed that his government was wrong and wasted funds on large-scale projects. The public became more enraged as a result.
- Loss of Military and Police Support: Nkrumah preferred the President’s Own Guard Regiment, his special guard, over a primary army. He fired a few senior army commanders. Soldiers felt disrespected and disregarded. Military leaders planned the coup as a result.
- Foreign pressure (especially from the USA): Nkrumah was close to China and the Soviet Union and opposed colonialism. He promoted pan-Africanism, or a united Africa. The United States of America viewed him as a threat and backed those who opposed him through the CIA. While he was travelling in China, this contributed to the coup.
