He was a virtuous administrator renowned for his immense valor, deep wisdom, and absolute devotion to his subjects. Alongside his deeply religious chief queen, Queen Vilasavati, and his exceptionally brilliant prime minister, Shukanasa, he ruled his vast empire with unmatched righteousness and prosperity.
King Tarapida lived happily after handing over the heavy responsibilities of the kingdom to his exceptionally brilliant and well-educated son, Chandrapida. Upon the young prince’s successful return from the royal gurukul, Tarapida celebrated his coronation as the crown prince (Yuvaraja-Abhisheka). Confident in Chandrapida’s unmatched virtues, martial skills, and the continued guidance of the veteran minister Shukanasa, the aging king smoothly transitioned the state affairs to the youth and retired to enjoy a peaceful, stress-free life.
He achieved the long-awaited happiness of having a son through divine intervention, rigorous penance, and blessings. For many years, the royal couple suffered the immense grief of being childless, prompting Queen Vilasavati to engage in strict fasts, charity, and intense worship of the gods. The turning point came when Tarapida saw a divine dream of the full moon entering the queen’s mouth, while minister Shukanasa dreamt of a white lotus being placed in his own wife’s lap. Shortly after these auspicious omens, Queen Vilasavati became pregnant and gave birth to Chandrapida, filling the king’s heart with ultimate joy.

राजा तारापीड महाकवि बाणभट्ट द्वारा रचित ‘कादम्बरी’ कथा के नायक चन्द्रापीड के पिता और उज्जयिनी (उज्जैन) नगरी के एक अत्यंत प्रतापी, न्यायप्रिय एवं चक्रवर्ती राजा थे। वे अपनी प्रजावत्सलता, वीरता और उत्तम शासन व्यवस्था के लिए संपूर्ण भूमंडल पर प्रसिद्ध थे। उनकी पटरानी का नाम विलासवती था तथा उनके अत्यंत निष्ठावान, नीतिवान और दूरदर्शी मुख्य अमात्य (मंत्री) का नाम शुकनास था, जिनकी सहायता से उन्होंने एक समृद्ध साम्राज्य का संचालन किया।
राजा तारापीड ने अपने समस्त राज्य का भार अपने परम योग्य, विनीत और सर्वकला-निपुण पुत्र चन्द्रापीड को सौंपकर सुखपूर्वक जीवन व्यतीत करना आरंभ किया। जब चन्द्रापीड अपनी चौदह वर्षों की कठिन शिक्षा पूरी कर विद्याश्रम से वापस लौटे, तब राजा तारापीड ने उनका भव्य ‘युवराज्याभिषेक’ कर दिया। अपने पराक्रमी पुत्र की योग्यताओं और वृद्ध मंत्री शुकनास की राजनीतिक कुशलता पर पूर्ण विश्वास करके राजा राजकार्य की चिंताओं से मुक्त हो गए और आनंदपूर्वक रहने लगे।
उन्हें पुत्र का परम सुख कठिन धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों, तपस्या और दिव्य स्वप्न के आशीर्वाद से प्राप्त हुआ। राजा तारापीड और रानी विलासवती लंबे समय तक संतानहीन थे, जिसके कारण संपूर्ण राजमहल शोक में डूबा रहता था। इस दुःख से मुक्ति पाने के लिए रानी विलासवती ने अनेक व्रत रखे, देवी-देवताओं की आराधना की और ब्राह्मणों को दान दिया। अंततः, एक रात्रि राजा तारापीड ने स्वप्न में देखा कि साक्षात् पूर्ण चंद्रमा रानी विलासवती के मुख में प्रवेश कर रहा है, जिसके कुछ समय बाद रानी गर्भवती हुईं और उन्होंने तेजस्वी चन्द्रापीड को जन्म देकर राजा को पुत्रसुख प्रदान किया।
