Salivation while chewing or having food in the mouth is a natural, unlearned reflex. Salivation at the sight or smell of favourite food is a conditioned reflex because it develops through previous experience and the brain’s memory of the food. Pavlov’s experiment showed that salivation could also be produced by associating food with the sound of a bell.
