Visual Attention Study: Where Do Volleyball Players Look?
Aim: To discover how players use their vision to anticipate and respond during a rally.
Participants and equipment: Invite players from different positions, such as setter, attacker, blocker and libero and use lightweight eye-tracking glasses. Record the rally with video so that gaze can be matched to the action.
Method: Have teams play several rallies. Track each player’s gaze from the serve through the pass, set, attack and defence. After each rally, ask players what they noticed and what they expected to happen. Compare gaze patterns across positions and between successful and unsuccessful plays.
What might be unexpected? Players may look away from the ball to read an opponent’s body, the setter’s hands or the blockers’ positioning. Defenders may shift their gaze from the ball to an attacker’s approach before the spike, while setters may briefly scan teammates and blockers before choosing where to set. Players in the same rally may look at different cues at the same moment, and experienced players may make quick glances rather than staring continuously at the ball.
How to show the results: Use a court diagram with gaze points marked for each player, plus a timeline showing where each player looked during the rally. Compare the patterns by position and by outcome.
Conclusion: The study could show that successful play depends not only on tracking the ball, but also on reading other players and anticipating what will happen next.
