1. Definition Rule by one person or a small group with unchecked power. Extreme authoritarian regime with total control over all aspects of life.
2. Ideology May or may not follow a specific ideology. Always based on a single, dominant ideology.
3. Control Mainly political control. Complete control over political, social, cultural, and personal life.
4. Pluralism Limited and controlled pluralism. No pluralism; one party, one ideology, one leader.
5. Judiciary and Legislature May exist but are subordinate to the dictator. Entirely controlled and manipulated by the ruling authority.
6. Public Participation Controlled or manipulated elections may be held. Forced and directed participation in state-sponsored activities.
7. Media Freedom Some censorship or control. Total control of mass media and propaganda.
8. Examples: Pakistan under General Musharraf, Zimbabwe under. Nazi Germany under Hitler, the USSR under Stalin, and North Korea under Kim Jong-un.
