Leeches are hematophagous ectoparasites. In Ayurvedic medicine, leeches are used to remove impure blood and blood clots. Leeches extract such blood, providing the patient with some respite. The leech’s body contains a chemical known as hirudin, which inhibits blood coagulation while it consumes blood. This hirudine is utilised for therapeutic purposes.
