A mariner’s compass is used to find directions, especially while travelling at sea. It contains a magnetic needle that can rotate freely. When the compass is kept flat, the needle comes to rest in the north-south direction. By observing the north end of the needle, sailors can identify north, south, east and west and determine the correct direction of travel.
