उत्तर

Freud explained personality stability and change through his psychosexual stages, stating that early childhood experiences strongly influence personality. He believed personality is mostly shaped by age five, but unresolved conflicts or fixations can continue into adulthood.

Each stage focuses on specific erogenous zones, and failure to resolve conflicts at any stage may result in lasting personality traits and behaviours later in life.

Here’s an overview of each stage and how problems might impact personality:

  1. Oral Stage (Birth to 1 year): The mouth is the main source of pleasure through activities like sucking and feeding. Improper weaning may lead to oral fixations such as overeating, smoking, nail-biting, dependency, or aggressive behaviour in adulthood.
  2. Anal Stage (1 to 3 years): At this stage, the child’s focus is on controlling bowel and bladder functions, and toilet training is important. Very strict or very relaxed training can lead to anal-retentive or anal-expulsive personality traits later.
  3. Phallic Stage (3 to 6 years): At this stage, children become aware of their genitals and gender differences. Freud described the Oedipus and Electra complexes here, and unresolved conflicts may cause authority issues, sexual identity confusion, or vanity later.
  4. Latency Stage (6 to 12 years): During this stage, sexual impulses are suppressed while the child develops social skills, academics, and same-gender friendships. Poor social or communication development may later cause low self-esteem or social awkwardness.
  5. Genital Stage (12 years and beyond): This is the last stage, during which mature intimate relationships are created, and sexual drives resurface. The success of earlier phases leads to a healthy personality. A lack of emotional maturity and difficulties establishing healthy romantic or sexual relationships may result from unresolved prior fixations.
