उत्तर

  • The commercial part of a harbour, containing facilities for embarking and disembarking passengers, loading and unloading, and storage, is called a port.
  • Ports are called gateways of international trade. 90-95% of international trade is carried out through them. A major part of international trade is carried out by waterways, and ports are the two ends of these waterways; they are extremely important.
  • Cargoes and travellers pass from one part of the world to another through these ports.
  • The ports provide facilities for docking, loading, unloading, and cargo storage.
  • To provide these facilities, the port authorities maintain navigable channels, arrange tugs and barges, and provide labour and managerial services.
