  3. Population in India is unevenly distributed. The northern plains have been densely populated for centuries due to fertile land, availability of water, and economic activities.
  4. Rivers like Ganga and Yamuna provide large tracts of fertile land apart from water. Also, the terrain is not a difficult one to travel.
  5. Due to the availability of even fertile land and water, they prefer settling in the northern plains as opposed to the desert areas of northwest India.

  2. The reason for the country being so populous is its favourable climate.
  3. India occupies 2.41% of the earth’s area, but it has 17.5% of the world’s population.

Due to the above reasons, the population density of India is high, i.e., 382 persons per sq. km., as per the 2011 census.
