The subtropical high-pressure belts, found around 30°N and 30°S latitudes, are called “horse latitudes” because of the calm winds (also known as doldrums) that often left sailing ships stranded in these areas.

According to one belief, when ships carrying horses ran out of food and water during long, windless journeys, sailors were forced to throw horses overboard to lighten the load. Because of this, these calm regions became known as “horse latitudes”.
