उत्तर

The emergence of Amul as a pioneering dairy giant began in December 1946 in the town of Anand, Gujarat, as a direct social response to the economic exploitation of rural milk farmers by local middlemen and monopoly private dairies like Polson. Under the exploitative colonial structure, farmers were forced to sell their surplus milk at arbitrary, rock-bottom prices, leading to widespread financial distress. Acting on the advice of legendary leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, local farmers united under the leadership of Tribhuvandas Patel to form a democratic cooperative union called the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited, which bypassed middlemen and directly connected rural producers with profitable urban consumer markets.

The cooperative model achieved massive scale and technical breakthroughs under the management of Dr. Verghese Kurien, often hailed as the “Milkman of India.” A pivotal breakthrough occurred when Amul successfully processed buffalo milk into skimmed milk powder and condensed milk for the first time globally, destroying the absolute market monopoly previously held by Western multinational companies that relied exclusively on cow’s milk. This structural and technological success led directly to the launch of “Operation Flood” in 1970, a monumental dairy development program that replicated the three-tier Amul cooperative structure across every state in India, effectively transforming the country from a heavily milk-deficient nation into the world’s largest milk producer.
