For instance, in dry regions, the availability of water becomes the key factor. In such areas, people often build their homes close to water sources like wells, ponds, or oases. This explains why in Rajasthan, the compactness of settlements largely depends on where water is accessible.
2. Ethnic and Cultural Factors: Social elements like caste, tribal identity, or community background also help shape the structure of rural settlements. In Indian villages, the dominant land-owning caste generally lives at the centre, forming the core of the village. Other caste groups, usually those offering services, settle around them in designated areas. Communities like the Harijans typically live on the outer edges, away from the main settlement, showing a pattern of social separation, which can divide the settlement into multiple sections.
3. Historical Factors: Historical developments have also greatly affected both the type and spread of rural settlements. Areas like the northern plains of India often faced repeated invasions, prompting villagers to choose compact settlements for safety and protection. Such layouts made it easier to guard against external threats. Additionally, during times of internal conflict and looting among rival groups, compact settlements offered greater defence and unity.
