उत्तर

Caste violence in India refers to acts of aggression, discrimination, and brutality committed on the basis of caste, particularly against marginalised communities such as Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). It represents a grim contradiction to the ideals of Indian democracy, which is built on the foundations of equality, liberty, and justice.

  1. Caste-Based Atrocities: Violence against Dalits and other backward castes often arises from their assertion of rights, demands for equality, or defiance of traditional hierarchies. These include physical assault, sexual violence, arson, social boycotts, and even lynching, especially in rural areas where caste hierarchies are deeply entrenched.
  2. Violence over Land and Honour: A significant portion of caste violence stems from disputes over land ownership and social dignity. Inter-caste marriages, particularly those involving Dalits and upper castes, often lead to ‘honour killings’ and community retaliation.
  3. Political and Economic Backlash: When members of lower castes attain political power or economic prosperity, dominant castes sometimes resort to violence to suppress their rise. Such violence is often systemic, organised, and supported by caste-based networks.
  4. Institutional Discrimination: Caste violence is not just physical but also institutional. Discrimination in education, employment, and the justice system, such as police inaction or biased court rulings, contributes to a culture of impunity.
  5. Undermining Democratic Values: Caste violence violates the rule of law, denies basic human rights, and weakens democratic institutions. It leads to fear and alienation among marginalised groups, limiting their participation in the democratic process and reinforcing social exclusion.
