Why is twilight formed before sunrise and after sunset?

Even when the Sun is just below the horizon, its light passes through Earth’s atmosphere and is refracted towards the ground, reaching the observer. The atmosphere is therefore illuminated before sunrise and for some time after sunset, producing twilight.
