Irrigation is the artificial supply of water to agricultural land and crops to help them survive, grow, and develop. It is an important supplement to natural rainfall, particularly in arid, semi-arid, or drought-prone areas where precipitation is erratic, seasonal, and unevenly distributed. Irrigation is carried out using a variety of traditional and modern technical techniques, including canals, tube wells, tanks, sprinklers, and drip networks, to ensure that crops receive constant, controlled, and timely moisture. Finally, it minimises agricultural reliance on unpredictable monsoons, allows farmers to plant different crops year-round (multi-cropping), and greatly increases agricultural productivity to ensure national food security.
