A player is offside if their body part, except hands and arms, is in the opponent’s half of the pitch and closer to the goal line than the ball and second-last opponent (not necessarily the goal keeper). Being in an offside position is not a crime. To commit an offence, a player must be in an offside position when the ball is last touched or played by a teammate, and be involved in an active play in the referee’s evaluation. When an offside occurs, the referee stops play and delivers an indirect free kick to the defending team from the guilty player’s active play location.
