A batsman may be called out if any part of his body, clothes or equipment intercepts a ball that would have hit the wicket if it had been pitched or would have been pitched, in a straight line between the wickets - even above the bails.

LBW (Leg Before Wicket) occurs when a bowled ball hits the batter’s leg, pad, or body, and the umpire believes the ball would have gone on to strike the stumps.
Leg Before Wicket is one method of dismissal in cricket. After the fielding team appeals, the umpire can give the batter out LBW if the ball was going to hit the wicket but was stopped by any part of the batter’s body (other than the hand holding the bat). The decision is based on several factors, such as where the ball was pitched, whether it struck the batter in line with the stumps, and whether the batter was trying to play a shot.
