Groundwater is freshwater that has percolated down through the top layers of soil and accumulated within the cracks, pores, and gaps of underground rock formations known as aquifers. It is mostly replaced by the slow downward infiltration of natural precipitation, river water, and agricultural runoff, which sink deep into the earth under gravity. The uppermost boundary of this saturated underground zone is known as the water table, which varies periodically based on rainfall and extraction rates. Groundwater, a highly reliable and naturally filtered resource, is accessed by open wells and tube wells, providing an essential lifeline for rural home consumption and intense crop irrigation in regions where surface rivers do not flow continuously.
