1. During the instruction fetch operation, the first byte of the instruction, that is the opcode, is loaded into the 8-bit instruction register.
2. The data stored in the instruction register is then supplied to the instruction decoder.
3. The decoder output, controlled by timing signals, manages the operation of the registers, ALU, and data/address buffers.
4. The outputs of the decoder together with the internal clock generator generate the required state and machine cycle timing signals.
