The important phases of the hydrologic cycle are:
- Evapotranspiration: Evaporation from surface water bodies and transpiration from vegetation total the loss of water from the planet. In farmed areas, evaporation and transpiration are hard to separate. Evapotranspiration is the collective term.
- Precipitation: It includes all cloud-fallen water that reaches Earth. To precipitate, cloud droplets or ice crystals must become heavy enough to fall. Large drops tend to fall. Gathering little droplets makes them heavy enough to fall out of the cloud as raindrops.
- Runoff: Gravity-pulled runoff is water on land. It restores groundwater and surface water by flowing into an aquifer or a river, stream, or watershed. When it drains into a watershed, unabsorbed water from rain, snowmelt, irrigation, or other sources contributes to the water cycle and water supply. Runoff also erodes canyons, gorges, and associated landforms.
- Condensation: As the warm water vapour rises into the atmosphere, it cools and condenses into tiny liquid water droplets or ice crystals, forming clouds.
