Echo sounding is a technique used to measure the depth of a sea or locate underwater objects. A transmitter on a ship sends ultrasonic waves into the water. These waves hit the sea-bed and bounce back as echoes.

The depth (d) is calculated using the formula:

d = `(v xx t)/2`
