- Less democratic: First of all, it might be argued that indirect elections are thought to be less democratic. Only a few electors, not their representatives, are chosen by the voters in these.
- Lack of a direct contact between the people and their representatives: The representatives’ relationships with the electorate are always restricted because they are not chosen by the people directly. Representatives are not well-known by the public.
- Increased role of political parties: An indirect election is one in which the electorate elects representatives after first electing the group of electors. Political parties participate in these two elections. Therefore, political parties play a bigger role in indirect elections.
- More chances of corruption: Corruption is more likely to occur in indirect elections. Since there are relatively few members of the electoral college compared to the total population, it is relatively simple for the competing candidates to buy the votes of the majority of them.
- Less political education: The electorate only has a secondary role in indirect elections. It is limited to elector elections rather than representative elections. As a result, opportunities for successful public engagement and political education are always restricted.
- Representatives can act in an irresponsible way: Because the public and their indirectly elected representatives don’t interact directly, the latter may act irresponsibly. They are free to disregard demands and public opinion.
- More expensive and delaying system: At least two votes are cast in indirect elections because they are conducted in two stages. As a result, holding elections is a more costly and time-consuming process.
- Less popular involvement in the organisation and working of the government: People do not participate in the final election of their representatives because of indirect elections. Their ability to influence government is so curtailed. They don’t grow attached to the legislators who are elected indirectly.
- Not a popular method of election: In actuality, the majority of states have chosen to use the direct election method since they believe it to be more democratic and practical. Direct elections have historically been preferred. The American people made the decision to switch from an indirect to a direct election system for US senators in the 19th century.
