1. Meaning The vertical height between two contour lines. The horizontal distance between two contour lines.
2. Measurement Measured in metres or feet (elevation difference). Measured in metres or cm on map (ground distance).
3. Indicates Change in height. Slope steepness (steeper = shorter H.E.).
4. Remains Always constant on a given map. Varies based on land slope.
5. Example If V.I. = 20 m, each contour is 20 m higher or lower. If contours are close together, H.E. is small = steep slope.
