1. Largest Contributor to National Income: The service sector accounts for the largest share of India’s economy. As of 2018-19, it contributed 54% to the country’s national income. This is a significant increase from 28% in 1950-51. The service sector’s share has surpassed both the primary (agriculture) and secondary (industry) sectors over the years.
2. Employment Generation: The service sector also contributes significantly to employment, employing about one-third (33%) of the labor force. This share has increased from 17% in 1950-51 to 32% in 2018-19. The sector employs people directly involved in services such as transport, communication, banking, and business activities, as well as professionals like teachers, doctors, lawyers, accountants, IT professionals, etc.
3. Support to Other Sectors: The service sector supports both the primary and secondary sectors. Efficient transport, communication, banking, and insurance services are essential for moving raw materials, finished goods, and capital. For example, banks mobilize savings and provide loans for investment in agriculture and industry. Insurance services help manage risks in these sectors. Thus, a developed service sector indirectly promotes overall economic growth.
4. Improvement in Quality of Life and Regional Development: A well-developed service sector contributes to a high standard of living by providing essential social services like education, health, housing, sanitation, and more. It also plays a role in reducing regional disparities by expanding infrastructural facilities in backward and rural areas, promoting rural development, and improving access to services.
