  1. Martin Luther King Jr. played a central role in organising and leading the non-violent mass civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s.
  2. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence, King believed that peaceful resistance was the most powerful weapon against racial injustice.
  3. The Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955–56 marked the beginning of his leadership, following the arrest of Rosa Parks.
  4. This successful protest catapulted him to national prominence. In 1957, he co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to coordinate non-violent protests across the South.
  5. King led numerous peaceful demonstrations, including the Birmingham Campaign and the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. 
  6. His leadership was instrumental in pressuring the U.S. government to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
  7. Despite facing arrests, threats, and violence, King never wavered from his commitment to non-violence.
  8. His leadership and moral authority made him the most influential figure in the American Civil Rights Movement.
