Caste is a traditional system of social stratification in India, deeply rooted in Hindu society and later influencing other communities as well. It classifies people into hereditary groups based on occupation, birth, and social status. The system is hierarchical in nature, dividing society into four broad varnas; Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras; and numerous jatis (subcastes).

• Hierarchical Structure: Castes are arranged in a rigid hierarchy of superiority and inferiority.

Caste as a Challenge to Indian Democracy:
