The hinterland of Haldia Planning Region is very vast and economically significant. It includes West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and parts of the North-Eastern states. This extensive hinterland is rich in coal, iron ore, jute, tea, and agricultural produce, which are exported through Haldia Port. At the same time, the region depends on the port for the import of crude oil, machinery, fertilizers, and other essential goods.

Thus, the wide hinterland makes Haldia an important gateway for trade and industrial growth in eastern and north-eastern India.
