The face-centred cubic (fcc) structure of copper metal is shown in the figure. The metal ions occupy the cube's corners and face centers. There are twelve identical metal ions surrounding each one. A single plane contains six of the twelve metal ions, with the remaining three situated above and below it. Therefore, 12 is the coordination number in a copper crystal.
