Attribution is the process by which people try to understand the causes behind others’ behavior. It involves deciding whether actions are due to internal factors (like personality or intentions) or external factors (like situations or environment). This helps us make sense of social interactions. However, our judgments can be biased for example, we may blame others’ behavior on their character while ignoring situational reasons (called fundamental attribution error), or we may credit our successes to ourselves and blame failures on circumstances (self-serving bias). Attribution is a key part of how we think about and relate to others in society.
