Woodcutter and The Water God
Once upon a time there lived a woodcutter in a small village. One day he went to the forest to cut a tree near the river. Suddenly his axe slipped from his hand and fell into the river. There was deep water in the river. He had only one axe. He sat by the river and began to weep and pray to God, wondering how he would provide for his family. Suddenly lightning flashed in the sky and a water goddess appeared from the water in front of the woodcutter. The woodcutter saluted her and told the water god everything in detail.
Hearing the words of the woodcutter, she drowned in the river. After a while, she came out with a golden axe. She showed the poor woodcutter a golden axe and asked: "Is that your axe?" The woodcutter examined the golden axe and said no. The goddess again went into the water and came back with a silver axe. She showed him a silver axe and asked, "Is this your axe?" The woodcutter checked and said “No”. That is not my axe. I am a poor man. I had an iron axe. Again the water goddess went into the water and appeared before him with an iron axe. she asked pointing at him. ‘Is this your axe?’ He saw the iron axe and was very happy. He said, 'Yes, this is my axe.' 'I am very happy with your honesty'. So I am giving you both silver and gold axes as a gift.' The woodcutter accepted the gift and after saluting the goddess he went home with the wood.'
This story teaches us the valuable lesson that honesty is always rewarded. The woodcutter's truthfulness and humility not only helped him regain his original possession but also brought him unexpected rewards. It serves as a reminder that being honest and true in our actions, even when we think no one is watching, can lead to greater blessings and respect.
