Martin has an intense fear of elevators. He is afraid that the elevator may fall or that he may become trapped inside it. The poorly lit interior, dirty walls, and quickly closing door make him even more uncomfortable. His fear becomes so strong that he sometimes chooses to climb seventeen floors by the staircase. His fear is irrational, but it has a powerful effect on his behaviour.
