2. The Communists operated within the Congress beginning in 1935, but there was a break in 1941, when they backed the British during World War II.
3. During independence, the CPI had a well-oiled party machinery and loyal cadre.
4. In 1947, they argued that power transfers didn’t constitute actual independence and promoted violent peasant uprisings in Telangana.
5. However, they were unable to build popular support and hence abandoned their violent tactics, contesting elections in 1951.
6. Following the ideological split between the Soviet Union and China, the CPI broke significantly in 1964. The pro-Soviet faction stayed as the CPI, while the pro-China faction became CPI (M).
