It is the process of converting fresh precipitate into colloidal particles by shaking it with a dispersion medium in the presence of a small amount of suitable electrolyte.

For example, a reddish-brown coloured colloidal solution is obtained from fresh precipitate of Fe(OH)₃ by shaking it with a small quantity of a dilute solution of FeCl₃.
