In the Indian context, socialism means that the government works to reduce economic inequality among people. Both the public sector (government) and private sector exist together. The government plans and regulates important industries, provides welfare services, and ensures fair distribution of wealth and opportunities. The word “socialist” was added to the Preamble by the 42nd Amendment to promote social and economic justice for all citizens.
