The Chipko Movement began in 1973 in Uttarakhand (then Uttar Pradesh) to stop the cutting of trees. Villagers, especially women led by Gaura Devi, hugged the trees to protect them from being felled. An earlier inspiration came from the Bishnoi Movement (1730 AD) at Khejarli, Rajasthan, where Amrita Devi and 363 Bishnois sacrificed their lives to save Khejri trees.
