  2. Ludwig van Beethoven: Despite progressive hearing loss and eventual deafness, he continued composing and created some of his most celebrated music.
  3. Thomas Edison: Edison had significant hearing loss. He persisted in his experiments and became a prolific inventor whose work helped transform communication and everyday life.
  4. Connection to the story: Marian is deaf and unable to speak, but she is intelligent, imaginative and deeply responsive to the world around her.
