Question

Coalitions are the logic of democratic politics in our kind of society. Does that mean that we will always have coalitions? Or can the national parties consolidate their positions again?

Answer 1

Coalitions are not inevitable in every election. The BJP won a majority on its own in 2014 and 2019, showing that a national party can consolidate its position. However, India’s social and regional diversity ensures that regional parties and coalition-building remain significant features of politics.
