1. Brutus speaks to Messala in the first line. He does not want him to continue speaking about Portia’s death because the subject is painful to him. The topic upsetting Brutus is the death of his wife, Portia.
2. Brutus is trying to put aside the thought of Portia’s death. This shows his stoic nature, self-control and ability to suppress personal grief in order to deal with public and military duties.
3. Messala is a friend and supporter of Brutus. He informs Brutus that Octavius, Antony and their forces are advancing towards Philippi and that many senators, including Cicero, have been put to death.
4. Brutus plans to march towards Philippi and meet the enemy there. Cassius advises that they should remain where they are and make the enemy come to them, so that the enemy will become tired and use up their supplies.
5. Cassius proves himself the better soldier because his plan is more cautious and practical. By waiting, their own troops would remain rested while Antony and Octavius would have to travel farther, grow tired and weaken their resources.
