उत्तर
Bonnie Kathleen Blair was born on March 18, 1964, in Cornwall, New York. She began skating in 1966 and showed remarkable talent from an early age. However, her family’s financial difficulties initially prevented her from competing internationally. Through discipline and perseverance, Blair continued to pursue her ambition.
She entered the 1982–1983 World Cup circuit and competed at the 1984 Olympic Games in Sarajevo, but did not win a medal. Her fortunes changed at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, where she set a new record and won her first Olympic gold medal in the 500-metre race. She also earned bronze in the 1,000 metres.
At the 1992 Albertville Games, Blair set new records in both events and became the first woman to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the same events. At the Lillehammer Games in Norway, she won the 500 metres for the third consecutive time. She also captured gold in the 1,000 metres, finishing 1.38 seconds ahead a record margin in Olympic Winter Games history. These achievements made her the first woman to win five Olympic gold medals and one bronze.
Blair received the James E. Sullivan Award in 1992 and became the first woman to win the Oscar Mathisen Award. In 1994, the Associated Press named her the best female athlete of the year. She set a new American record in the 1,000 metres in 1995 and then retired. In 2004, she was inducted into the United States Hall of Fame. In just twelve years, Blair transformed speed and determination into lasting sporting glory.
