उत्तर
The sex ratio is defined as the number of females per thousand males.
In India, on average, there are more males than females about 940 females for every 1000 males.
In some states, the sex ratio is very low; for example, 877 females per 1000 males in Haryana and 893 in Punjab. This imbalance is mainly due to higher mortality rates of female babies and the practice of female foeticide (killing of the girl child before or at birth).
On the other hand, Kerala and Puducherry have the highest sex ratios, with 1084 females per 1000 males in Kerala and 1038 in Puducherry. The higher literacy rate and better social awareness in these states are major reasons for this improvement.
The low number of females per 1000 males in India is a serious concern and can lead to several social problems in the future.
