1. SAARC was formally established in Dhaka, with its Secretariat-General based in Kathmandu. It was agreed that member nations would meet once a year and contribute annually to fund the salaries of the General Secretary, seven Directors, and support staff.
2. The position of Principal Secretary would rotate among member countries every three years, allowing each country to appoint a representative in turn.
3. Member nations reaffirmed their commitment to the UN Charter, upholding principles such as sovereign equality, peaceful resolution of disputes, non-interference in internal affairs, and avoiding the use or threat of force against any nation’s independence or territorial integrity.
4. The members emphasised the importance of the United Nations as the main platform for resolving global peace and security issues.
5. They also reiterated their strong belief in the continuing relevance and purpose of the Non-Aligned Movement as a guiding force in international relations.
