1. Recognising the crucial need for well-maintained roads in remote and interior parts of the country, the Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in the year 2000.
2. In its initial phase, the scheme focused on connecting villages with a population of 1,000 or more through road construction. By 2001, this initiative was integrated into the broader Pradhan Mantri Gramoday Yojana.
3. By the year 2005, nearly 75,000 kilometres of rural roads had been constructed. The core objective was to ensure that people living in villages could benefit from the nation’s economic development and experience a positive change in their standard of living.
