The crofter trusted the peddler since he was a lonely old man looking for companionship. When the peddler sought shelter, the crofter greeted him warmly, brought him food and tobacco, and even played cards with him. He spoke up about his past and proudly displayed the thirty kroners he had earned from selling his cow’s milk. His kindness and openness reflected his trusting nature and his pleasure in having someone to chat to.

However, the peddler broke the trust. After leaving in the morning, he returned and broke open the crofter’s window, stealing the thirty kroners. Later, he felt embarrassed and nervous. The crofter’s goodwill plagued his conscience, and he understood he had mistreated a simple and generous man who had shown him affection and respect.
