अधोलिखितस्य अनुच्छेदस्य संस्कृतभाषया अनुवाद कुरुत।

There were two brothers in a village who earned a living by selling firewood in the market. Every day, they went to the forest to chop firewood. One day as they were about to cut a tree, it spoke and requested them not to cut it. It gave them two gold apples in exchange. However, the brothers felt disappointed with the number of apples and decided to cut down the tree anyway. As they lifted their axes, the tree threw needles at them and punished them for their greed.

एकस्मिन् ग्रामे द्वौ भ्रातरौ अवसताम्, यौ आपणे काष्ठानि विक्रीय स्वजीविकां चालयतः स्म। तौ प्रतिदिनं इन्धनकाष्ठानि च्छेत्तुं वनं गच्छतः स्म। एकस्मिन् दिवसे यदा तौ एकं वृक्षं कर्तयितुम् उद्यतौ अभवताम्, तदा वृक्षः अवदत् तौ च तत् न कर्तयितुं प्रार्थयत। विनिमये सः भ्रातृभ्यां द्वे सुवर्ण-कर्कन्धू (सेवफलानि) अयच्छत्। तथापि, भ्रातरौ फलनां संख्यां दृष्ट्वा असन्तुष्टौ अभवताम् सर्वथा च वृक्षं कर्तयितुं निश्चितवन्तौ। यदैव तौ स्वपरशून् (कुठारान्) उपरि अकुरुताम्, तदैव वृक्षः तयोः उपरि सूचिकाः अक्षिपेत् तयोः लोभस्य कृते च तौ अदण्डयत्।
