प्रश्न
A narrow beam PQ of white light is passing through a glass prism ABC as shown in the diagram.

Trace it on your answer sheet and show the path of the emergent beam as observed on the screen DE.
(i) Write the name and cause of the phenomenon observed.
(ii) Where else in nature is this phenomenon observed?
(iii) Based on this observation, state the conclusion which can be drawn about the constituents of white light.

उत्तर

(i) Dispersion of light
Cause: The dispersion of white light occurs because colors of white light travel at different speeds through glass prism. Different colours undergo different deviations on passing through prism.
(ii) Rainbow is the example of dispersion of light observed in nature.
It is caused due to dispersion of sunlight by water droplets in the atmosphere. It always forms in the direction opposite to the sun.
(iii) White light is a mixture of seven colours. The sequence of colours given by the prism is Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. VIBGYOR is the acronym for this sequence. The red light bends the least and violet light bends the most.

Why do the component colours of incident white light split into a spectrum while passing through a glass prism, explain
In the figure given alongside, a narrow beam of white light is shown to pass through a triangular glass prism. After passing through the prism, it produces a spectrum YX on the screen.
Why do different colours of white light bend through different angles with respect to the incident beam of light?
When a white light ray falls on a prism, the ray at its first surface suffers ______.
Draw a labeled ray diagram to illustrate the dispersion of a narrow beam of white light when it passes through a glass prism.
Write three conditions necessary to obtain a pure spectrum on a screen. Name the instrument in which the conditions stated by you are fulfilled.
Sunlight entering through a narrow aperture falls on a prism. Draw a neat labelled ray diagram to show the formation of the spectrum on a screen. Name the colour obtained nearer the base of the prism.
Curved mirrors have surfaces that are spherical, cylindrical, parabolic, and ellipsoid.
The angle of deviation through a prism is minimum when

- Incident rays and emergent rays are symmetric to the prism.
- The refracted ray inside the prism becomes parallel to its base.
- The angle of incidence is equal to that of the angle of emergence.
- When the angle of emergence has doubled the angle of incidence.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
When sunlight passes through water droplets in the atmosphere it gets dispersed into its constituent colours forming a rainbow. A similar phenomenon is observed when white light passes through a prism.
Instead of sunlight, a green-coloured ray is passed through a glass prism. What will be the colour of the emergent ray?
Make a rainbow
Try to make your own rainbow. You can try this project in the morning or in the evening. Stand with your back towards the Sun. Take a hosepipe or a water pipe used in the garden. Make a fine spray in front of you. You can see different colours of rainbow in the spray.
