Introduction:

Blood is a red-coloured fluid that flows throughout the body, and it is considered a fluid connective tissue because it connects various organs by transporting substances. Oxygenated blood is deep red in colour and has a slightly salty taste. It is slightly alkaline, with a pH of 7.4, which is essential for maintaining proper body functions.

Components of Blood

Blood is made up of two main parts:

1. Plasma: It is the liquid part of blood and makes up about 55% of the total blood volume. Plasma serves as a transport medium that carries essential substances like oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body.

2. Blood Cells: Blood cells make up the remaining 45% of blood and are of three main types.

  1. Red Blood Cells (RBCs): Contain haemoglobin, transporting oxygen to the body and carbon dioxide to the lungs.
  2. White Blood Cells (WBCs): Part of the immune system, defending the body against infections and diseases.
  3. Platelets: Cell fragments that aid in blood clotting to stop bleeding at injury sites.

Key Points: Blood

  • Blood is a fluid connective tissue made of plasma (55%) and formed elements (RBCs, WBCs, platelets).
  • Plasma contains water, proteins, electrolytes, hormones, and waste products.
  • RBCs transport oxygen and carbon dioxide, WBCs help in immunity, and platelets help in blood clotting.
  • Blood is slightly alkaline (pH ~7.4) and maintains proper physiological balance (homeostasis).
  • Blood helps in the transport of nutrients, wastes, and hormones, and also regulates body temperature.
