The area lying between urban and rural areas is generally called the rural-urban fringe or urban fringe.

It is a transition zone where both rural and urban features are found. In such areas, agricultural land may exist along with houses, industries, roads, schools, shops and other urban facilities. As cities expand, these fringe areas gradually become more urbanised.
