Me Hello, Madam, my name is Sunil Roy I am a class X student of St. Pauls School. I would like to thank you for taking out the time to come to our school during the environment protection week. I would like to ask you some questions on how we can help save the environment.
Environmentalist It’s my pleasure to be here, Prashant. I’m glad that your school is celebrating environment protection week. Please go ahead and ask me anything you want to know.
Me Ma’am, we all know that protecting the environment is the need of the hour. But what’s more important is for people to know what they are supposed to do to protect it. We students may not be able to contribute financially towards any environment protection initiatives. So, I would like to know what it is that we students can do on our own to contribute.
Environmentalist That’s exactly the kind of the point of view we need to work towards saving the environment. As students, there is plenty you can do to make a contribution. You can start by doing simple things like using cloth bags instead of plastic bags, turning the tap off when the water is not needed, and using limited water to shower. You can save energy at home by switching off the lights and fans, when not in use. These small contributions will certainly help in the long run.
Me Everything you just said sounds perfectly easy. We all could start doing that right away. Could you also tell me a little about recycling?
Environmentalist Recycling is the process of reusing the waste that is non-biodegradable. Biodegradable waste is the one which can be decomposed by living organisms and used as fertilizers, etc. The non-biodegradable waste like electronic waste, plastic bags, plastic bottles, tin cans, glass, and rubber cannot be decomposed or decayed and therefore needs to be recycled. Recycling means that these materials should be reused and not dumped into the environment after being used just once.
Me Well, we all recycle plastic and glass bottles and even plastic bags. But I think we do need to make a much more conscious effort towards recycling. What about the greenhouse gases? How are they harmful and how can we protect the environment from them?
Environmentalist Greenhouse gases are the gases that trap heat in the atmosphere and cause global warming. Carbon dioxide, Methane, and Nitrous Oxide are the main greenhouse gases that contribute towards global warming. These gases can stay in the atmosphere for thousands of years and cause an imbalance in the ecosystem. Planting more trees, limiting the use of air conditioners, restricting the use of hot water, avoiding products that have excessive packaging, gradually starting to use solar panels, and conserving energy are just some of the ways by which we can reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the environment.
Me Wow! There is a lot that we need to start doing if we want to save the environment. I hope that with our collective efforts we will be able to protect our environment from further damage.
Environmentalist Yes, people all over the world need to work collectively in order to save the environment. Also, a lot of initiatives are being taken towards conserving energy, creating alternative sources of fuels, using nature-friendly products, saving the wildlife, etc. I truly hope that we will soon be able to restore the damage that we have done to our planet
Me Thank you so much for sharing all that information with us, ma’am. I now know a lot about how to save the environment and will sincerely work towards it. We, students, are also going to plan campaigns to spread awareness about the same.
Environmentalist I’m happy that I could be of help. That would be a very good initiative on your part. I wish you all the best for it. Do let me know if you need any help.
Me We will surely do that, Ma’am. Thank you once again!
