- Gender diversity is linked to the notion of ‘gender’. Gender includes diversities that go beyond gender binaries of femalemale, feminine-masculine, her-his etc.
- The understanding of gender diversity includes the sexual orientation of people.
- There is dominance of ‘heteronormativity’ in society and all social institutions. But some societies have challenged the notion of binary and are more inclusive of sexual and gender pluralities.
- Gender expression is linked to gender socialisation and leads to diversity. Most people are forced to follow the expectations of a gender linked to one’s sex. However, now societies are gradually opening up to accept gender fluidity.
- There was decriminalisation of homosexuality in India by a historic judgement of the Supreme Court on 6 th September 2018.
